Your annual meeting - Power for the Generations
Clay Electric Co-operative is excited to have our 75th Annual Meeting of Members this year. It will be held on August 22 at Oil Belt Christian Service Camp on the northwest side of Charley Brown Park. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. with the business meeting starting at 6:30 p.m.
Your electric cooperative was born in 1944. Our founding members saw the lights come on in Flora and wanted to bring that exciting new technology to the rural residents of the county. Clay Electric started with the same mission we have today, to bring safe, reliable and exceptional service to our member owners. The electric companies of the time would not build infrastructure out to county residents. There wasn’t enough money to be made to offset the cost of building miles of lines and maintaining them to bring power to just a handful of households. The founding members of the cooperative realized the only way to get power to the hardworking folks outside the city limits was to do it themselves.
1944 was a tumultuous time. Material the founding members had laid aside was requisitioned by the war effort and the first light on Clay Electric lines wouldn’t be turned on until 1946. It is a testament to the dedication of the community that Clay Electric persevered and still provides power to areas for-profit utilities would not service.
It is important to remember you are not a customer but a member. The cooperative model is built on serving you. Clay Electric is a nonprofit, any money we make at the end of the year is to be paid back to the membership in the form of capital credits. We have paid back two years’ worth of capital credits this year and look to pay back several more years’ worth of capital credits next year.
The 75th Annual Meeting of Members is your chance to vote for the trustees that will represent you on Clay Electric’s board of directors. You have a direct hand in the running of your cooperative. All you need to do is show up and make your voice heard.
Join us for the 75th Annual Meeting of Members on Thursday, August 22 at Oil Belt Christian Service Camp on the northwest side of Charley Brown Park on Old Hwy 50 west of Flora.
